Health.com Launches New TalkPress VIP Forum

Health.com has launched the Ask the Natural Living Experts forum hosted on the new TalkPress VIP service:
health-talkpress-vip

This new discussion area enables Helath.com’s visitors to interact with healthy living experts in a forum and Q&A environment. This forum site also runs our anti-spam service Akismet and integrates seamlessly with the other Health.com WordPress.com VIP blogs. That means visitors to Health.com sites such as Healthy Living, are already registered for the forums and can begin interacting immediately.

For a bit more info on the technical workings of TalkPress head over to Sam’s post on that topic. And for more details on the building of this forum project, the lead consultant Watershed Studio has posted a few thoughts.

MyBabyOurBaby Powered by WordPress MU and bbPress

MyBabyOurBaby.com is a really impressive site built with WordPress MU and bbPress. The site’s focus is on “saving memories you didn’t even know about” in a very scrapbook-like fashion:

Sure, plenty of other sites allow parents to create online scrapbooks and keepsake photo albums, but no other site makes it easier for busy parents to collect and organize memories from invited family members and friends.

In a post on the WordPress MU forums, co-founder Beau Lebens talks about what it took to build the site and future plans to release some of the custom plugins:

Hi all, I wanted to throw up the site I’ve been working on for a while which uses WPMU as it’s core. It’s *heavily* modified, but there are *no* core hacks (which I’ve quite proud of).

Not modifying/hacking the core means the upgrade path to new versions of WordPress will be a smooth one, and functionality can be shared across different areas of the site.

Beau adds that:

We’ve also got some forums which are powered by bbPress, and that’s completely integrated including avatars, profiles, etc.

In the coming weeks they also hope to give back to the WordPress community:

I’m hoping to release a number of plugins based on the customizations and things that we did for the site, so I’ll be sure to post info on those in the forums here once I get them out.

9rules Community Site Powered by WordPress and bbPress

When publishers ask me for a great example of a community site built with WordPress, I always mention 9rules.com, a site where you can “Share. Learn. Discover” :

Built with WordPress and seamlessly integrated with our discussion forum software bbPress the site includes member profiles, streams, private messages, twitter and flickr integration, and much more.

As 9rules wrote on their blog a few months ago:

When it comes to coding up this site we have three options:

1. Do it ourselves.
2. Put a blindfold over Tyme’s eyes and four keyboards and hope that after a week of solitude she pushed out something cool.
3. Get someone else to do it.

We went with 1 and 3, but not in the way you might be thinking. The core of 9rules is powered by WordPress, bbPress and simplepie. Now you can’t get both of those packages, install them and all of a sudden have another 9rules. We customized them a ton to fit our needs, but without them as the foundation we wouldn’t be close to where we are now.
