FAQ
How do we qualify?
We ask for the following:
- That you have a rockstar in-house developer or work with a top consultant (we can recommend a partner)
- A “Powered by WordPress.com VIP” link on your site
- Standard hooks in your theme for our stats
- Custom or GPL compatible themes/plugins.
- Your tags go into and point to our Tags community
We can’t accept everyone who applies, but don’t be shy—if this sounds like a good fit, get in touch.
How does it work?
Changes to your themes, plugins, and custom code are all managed using Subversion. Our VIP support team reviews every line of code you commit for feedback on performance optimizations, security, and best practices, and they handle all of your deployments as well.
Can we use plugins?
Yes! You can run most plugins, so long as they don’t modify database tables or manipulate the file system. And if a particular plugin isn’t a good fit, we’ll work with you to find a suitable alternative.
We also have dozens of popular plugins from the WordPress community and our Featured Partners pre-installed and ready for use.
What’s your uptime?
Pretty great! WordPress.com has 100% uptime most months — see for yourself on our status page, or this independently monitored availability report.
Is our custom code required to be licensed under the GPL?
No, custom code that you and your team have written from scratch does not require a license; however, we do require any WordPress community themes or plugins that you use on your website to be GPL licensed.
How do we register user accounts?
By default, users registered through VIP-hosted websites are created as WordPress.com users, which means that the millions of users logged in to WordPress.com will also be logged in on your domain, making it easier for them to comment on your site. If you’d like to be able to register your own user profiles or create custom registration fields you’ll need to use a 3rd-party registration service.
